What are the new membership options? HNL Tool Library now offers unlimited tool access by the month and by the year, priced at $35/month or $180/year.

What do the new memberships include? All memberships include one additional household member—so if you live at the same address, you can both borrow and use tools. We’ve also added a members-only text line at 808-746-2299 to assist with reservations, renewals, and general questions.

Why did the annual price increase? In the past few years, the inventory has grown by more than 20x—and so have the costs of maintaining high-quality tools. As a non-profit organization, revenue from memberships is our primary source of funding, so we’ve needed to share the cost of added staff, expanded hours, and new tool purchases with the members who benefit from our service. At less than 50 cents a day, we still think annual membership is the best deal in town! However, we remain committed to providing access to tools for as many people as possible. If financial circumstances prevent you from becoming a member, please contact us to discuss alternatives.

Can I renew at my old price? Yes! If you renew your membership before November 1st 2020, we’ll extend your membership by an additional year regardless of your current membership type or expiration date.

What are your expanded hours? We’re currently open Tuesdays from 9am-12pm, Fridays from 1pm-5pm, Saturdays from 9am-12pm and we’re planning to add one extra shift each week beginning November 1. Want to weigh in on the day and time? Cast your vote.

Do you have senior, student, or military discounts? Yes! Seniors must be 65+, students must be enrolled full-time, and members of the military must be on active duty. To request one of these memberships, please contact us.

Do you offer special memberships for low-income households? Not yet, but stay tuned! We’re currently building our Tools+Aloha fund, which we’ll use to offer reduced-rate memberships for low-income families. Sign up for HNL Tool Library emails and you’ll be the first to know when we’re accepting applications.

Can I switch from annual to monthly or vise-versa? Of course! Send us a message and we’ll apply your existing account credit toward your new membership.

Is membership based on the calendar month/year? No. Memberships are active for 30 or 365 days from your signup date, so there’s no need to align your projects with the calendar.

How do I add a household member? Send us the name and email of your household member—we’ll get in touch to verify proof of address and set up their account.

Do volunteers get free memberships? Yes! We’re super-grateful for the volunteers—or Tooligans— that help keep HNL Tool Library running. One way we show our appreciation is by offering complementary membership for Tooligans that spend 10+ hours each month volunteering in-person or remotely. Learn more and apply here.

Are these changes a result of COVID-19? No. We’re committed to continually improving our service regardless of the developing public health situation.
